“Eye diseases — especially those that cause blindness
— can have a dramatic impact on a patient’s quality of life. Support for endowed chairs allows physician-scientists to pursue novel treatments that benefit patients worldwide.”
— Eric Nudleman, MD, PhD
Thank you to Dr. Andrew Viterbi, generous and dedicated friend of UC San Diego.
Dr. Andrew Viterbi’s longtime support has helped ensure UC San Diego’s growth as a hub for ground- breaking innovation. The Viterbi Family Chair for Retinal Vascular Diseases is one of six endowed chairs established as part of his transformative gift to the Viterbi Family Department of Ophthalmology, which was made to honor his late father, ophthalmologist Dr. Achille Viterbi. As one of the most prestigious honors bestowed upon faculty, endowed chairs recognize professors whose innovative work leads their field, impacts our dynamic campus community, and transforms our world.
Inaugural chair-holder, Eric Nudleman, MD, PhD, is an associate professor of clinical ophthalmology who specializes in vitreoretinal diseases. In his clinical practice, his area of interest is adult and pediatric vitreoretinal diseases, including the surgical management of these disorders. Dr. Nudleman’s research focuses on angiogenesis and identifying novel targets for treating retinal vascular diseases including diabetic retinopathy and retinopathy of prematurity.
