David J Schanzlin, M.D., serves as Professor and Director of Keratorefractive Surgery at Shiley Eye Center, UCSD Department of Ophthalmology. A leder in the field of keratorefractive surgery for over 26 years, he has dedicated his career to the development of various surgical corrections for nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. Praised by his colleagues, Dr. Schanzlin is consistently elected as one of the Best Doctors in America®. His vast knowledge and experience have led to appearances as a medical expert on ABC News, the Today Show, Extra, and numerous times on local affiliates. In 2003, Dr. Schanzlin received the Jose I. Barraquer Award for significant contributions in the field of refractive surgery and exemplifying scientific dedication.
Dr. Schanzlin is former Professor and Chairman at Saint Louis University's Department of Ophthalmology and former Director of the prestigious Anheuser-Busch Eye Institute. Dr Schanzlin completed his medical education and residency at the University of Chicago, followed by fellowships at the University of California, San Francisco's Proctor Foundation.
Truly world-renowned as both an educator and an innovator in his field, he served as the worldwide lead investigator during the 13 years of development and clinical studies on Intacs®, and is considered the world authority on this procedure. Because of his distinguished reputation as a refractive surgeon and researcher, he was elected by his peers President of the International Society of Refractive Surgery (1998-2000). The Society is a 3,500 member body of refractive surgeons worldwide. In addition to refractive surgery, Dr. Schanzlin's practice at the Shiley Eye Center is in anterior segment disease and cataract surgery.
